Oscar Discharged from Hospital After Cardiac EpisodeOscar Discharged from Hospital After Cardiac Episode

Oscar, the former Chelsea midfielder, has been discharged from the hospital following his admission last week due to an abnormal cardiac episode.

The 34-year-old player experienced discomfort and briefly lost consciousness while using an exercise bicycle during a routine pre-season fitness test at São Paulo’s training complex on November 11. He was subsequently admitted to the cardiology unit at Einstein Hospital in São Paulo, where he underwent thorough testing throughout the week before his release on Sunday.

A statement from São Paulo FC confirmed, “Extensive investigations carried out at the hospital revealed that the player experienced an episode of vasovagal syncope.” The statement further noted, “He was stable and clinically well during his hospitalization, and will now adhere to a medical rest program for the coming days.”

Vasovagal syncope is characterized by a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure, leading to decreased blood flow to the brain and temporary loss of consciousness.

Sources informed ESPN that initial tests yielded positive results, indicating that Oscar’s heart is “intact,” and remarked, “Of all the bad things that could have happened, this was the least bad.”

Oscar returned to his boyhood club, São Paulo, in December 2024 after an eight-year stint in China. His current contract is set to expire at the end of 2027.
