Oyarzabal Reflects on Victory and Upcoming DerbyOyarzabal Reflects on Victory and Upcoming Derby

Mikel Oyarzabal is convinced that the significant victory against Celta, achieved while playing with one fewer player for the entire second half, will bolster Real Sociedad’s morale and enhance their standing in the league, distancing them from the relegation zone. The captain takes pride in the fact that many of his 123 goals, including a brace against the Galicians, have contributed to the team’s success.

Oyarzabal expressed his satisfaction with the win against Celta, stating, “I am pleased because, in the end, what matters is winning, and we managed to do that under difficult circumstances, which makes the three points particularly valuable for our morale. This match allows us to emerge stronger, given the challenges we faced, and we must continue to push forward.”

He analyzed the encounter against the Vigo side, acknowledging it was a challenging match that required perseverance. “It was a tough game, and it was a hard-fought victory, obviously affected by the red card. However, with effort, we can achieve success. The weather conditions were not in our favor; the rain made play difficult. It was challenging for both sides, even with them having an extra player. We are pleased to have tried our best, secured the win, and earned the three points.”

Oyarzabal also spoke about the positive influence of new coach Matarazzo, noting, “Everyone has clicked into place and stepped up. Those who play have intensified their efforts, and those who don’t see a renewed opportunity to contribute. And when results come, everything becomes easier.”

When pressed about the coaching change, the captain acknowledged the players’ responsibility during both challenging and successful times. “Of course, he has brought his ideas, which he has communicated clearly, and we are trying to implement them. Ultimately, the players have more influence over outcomes, both good and bad. Taking responsibility for what happened, we are now focused on extending this positive momentum.”

Oyarzabal dismissed talk of luck surrounding Matarazzo’s arrival, stating, “You might call it luck, but many aspects are being addressed to ensure success. It’s clear that precision in critical moments is necessary, but numerous efforts are being made daily at Zubieta that manifest in our matches. There are days we hit the mark and others where the finer details do not go our way, which can be decisive.”

With his two goals against Celta, Oyarzabal has now scored 123 and is closing in on the top scorers’ ranks in Real’s history. “I hope to score more and continue helping the team.”

Finally, he was asked about the upcoming derby against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. “That’s still a long way off; let me enjoy this victory after all the struggles we’ve endured. Obviously, the derby is an extremely important match for everyone. The coach understands this, and we will go to Bilbao aiming to continue this positive streak and secure another three points.”
