Patrick Kelly Expresses Excitement After Northern Ireland DebutPatrick Kelly Expresses Excitement After Northern Ireland Debut

Patrick Kelly has expressed his delight at making his Northern Ireland debut, but admits he is eager for more playing time.

The 21-year-old midfielder for Barnsley came on as a late substitute during the team’s 1-0 victory over Luxembourg, marking the conclusion of their World Cup qualifying campaign under manager Michael O’Neill.

Having developed at Irish Premiership club Coleraine, Kelly transitioned to West Ham as a teenager in 2022. After a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers, he made a permanent move to Barnsley in the summer.

“This is something I have been working towards for quite some time,” Kelly remarked regarding his Northern Ireland debut. “I’m incredibly happy; it’s a proud moment for me.”

He was on standby for the previous two national team camps and had discussions with O’Neill about his chances of being called up. With injuries affecting key midfielders Shea Charles and Ali McCann, as well as suspensions for Ethan Galbraith and George Saville, Kelly recognized the opportunity presented to him.

Reflecting on his transition from West Ham, Kelly stated, “I had a year left on my contract at West Ham and had just completed a successful loan. I was likely to go on loan again to Doncaster, the same club where I had previously played.”

During conversations with O’Neill, he sought advice regarding several permanent offers he had received, believing that a permanent move would provide him with a greater sense of value and stability at a club.

O’Neill endorsed Kelly’s decision to join Barnsley, indicating that it was the right move for his career development. “He spoke to me in the summer, and I felt it was best for him to leave and join Barnsley. He is included in the squad because he has made a significant impact there,” O’Neill elaborated.

Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane has praised Kelly for his seamless integration into the team, highlighting the club’s aspirations for promotion.

With his first senior cap secured, Kelly is now focused on achieving further appearances in the World Cup play-offs scheduled for March. The draw for opponents will take place on Thursday, but it is known that Northern Ireland will face a team from pot one in the semi-finals.

“I am eager for more opportunities, and this would be the biggest game of my career,” Kelly added. “I hope to maintain good form at Barnsley, and with luck, we can qualify for the World Cup.”
