Pellegrino Matarazzo From Childhood Dreams to Coaching SuccessPellegrino Matarazzo From Childhood Dreams to Coaching Success

Pellegrino Matarazzo developed a profound passion for football as a child, captivated by Diego Armando Maradona’s Napoli while living in the United States. Although he was unable to realize his dream of becoming a professional player, he ultimately found his path as a respected coach.

Matarazzo reminisces about his childhood aspirations. “My dreams revolved around football; I grew up watching the game on my parents’ small television. I belong to the era when Maradona was playing for Napoli. I learned about football through watching and discussing it with my father, especially since it was not widely recognized as a sport in the United States. However, my Italian roots fueled my passion.”

The new Real Sociedad coach acknowledges the limited prospects he faced as a player. “I attempted to pursue a football career initially in Italy, but I did not work with the right agents. Promises were made, yet I never had the opportunity to try out. I returned to the United States, where a German friend, who has since become close to me, saw me play and suggested I consider playing in Germany. I eagerly accepted the offer. I packed my belongings and started playing in the fourth division at the age of 23, which was somewhat late for such endeavors, and I ended up spending 25 years in Germany.”
