Pep Guardiola is set to take charge of his 1,000th match when Manchester City faces Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. The esteemed manager expresses admiration for the remarkable milestones he has achieved throughout his career.

Since embarking on his managerial journey with Barcelona B in 2007, Guardiola has amassed 715 victories across all competitions. His impressive track record includes 12 top-flight titles won with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, as well as three UEFA Champions League trophies.

At the age of 54, Guardiola has suffered just 128 defeats and has secured an additional 14 cup victories during his illustrious tenure.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Guardiola acknowledged his accomplishments, saying, “Of course I know, a lot. The numbers are insane, I’m sorry to tell you.”

He continued, “While I am not fixated on the number of wins, when you examine the milestones and reflect on the victories, especially in the Premier League and Champions League, we have achieved remarkable feats at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and here at City.”

Guardiola recognizes the difficulty of replicating such success, stating, “If I were to start over, I would not reach these heights again; it involves a significant number of games. A few defeats, in comparison to 1,000 games, are expected. I hope we can continue this journey on Sunday.”

His coaching philosophy has reshaped English football, inspiring a multitude of managers across the country with a distinctive style of play. Under his leadership, Manchester City has set numerous records, including being the first team to achieve 100 points in a season, the first to secure a domestic treble, and the first to win four consecutive league titles.

Guardiola remarked on his impressive win percentage, stating, “It seems I possess false humility, but achieving over 70% victories—winning seven out of every ten games—is remarkable. Such success is attainable because of the talented players I have had at Barcelona, Bayern, and City. However, this journey also requires immense dedication, passion, and love, in which no one can surpass me.”

When asked about being regarded as the greatest manager of all time, Guardiola humorously replied, “They are completely right! My influence, like every manager’s throughout history, is significant. I recognize my success, as evidenced by the numbers, and it has been gratifying to witness my teams perform well. However, I never set out with the goal of being the best.”

Guardiola was recently inducted into the League Managers Association (LMA) Hall of Fame, a recognition that former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson emphasized must not be underestimated in terms of its significance.

As Manchester City prepares to face Liverpool, a club with which they have developed a compelling rivalry, Guardiola noted, “I believe we have pushed each other to improve. If I had to choose one rival to share this personal milestone with, it would undoubtedly be Liverpool.”

Reflecting on the nature of their rivalry, Guardiola said, “Liverpool, especially under Jurgen Klopp, has been our most significant opponent in this country. This competition has been enriching, and I have great respect for Klopp, whom I have faced the most times—31 matches, with him having bested me on 11 occasions.”

In conclusion, Guardiola expressed his appreciation for the rivalry, stating, “This healthy competition has always been enjoyable. I respect Jurgen immensely and miss the challenges he presented. The journey we have shared has been truly significant.”
