In a post-match interview, a defensive Mauricio Pochettino criticized the notion of the United States men’s national team being composed of “regular players” after his alternative lineup achieved a remarkable 5-1 victory over Uruguay. This victory marked a historic moment, as it was the first time the U.S. scored five goals against a World Cup-winning team or any South American side.

“I don’t want to be negative, but I strongly dislike the term ‘not regular players.’ What does that even mean?” Pochettino remarked after the game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, when asked about the significance of a win that did not include several star athletes. “It’s the USA playing; it’s the national team. We need to move past that mindset. Every time we make a decision about the starting XI, it’s the U.S. men’s national team that takes the field.

“I find it disrespectful to talk in such a way. We must give credit to all the athletes involved. What I truly appreciate from the team, the roster, and the staff is the progress we are making in connecting as a unit, which is the most critical aspect.”

As the team approaches the November training camp, Pochettino opted not to include marquee players such as Christian Pulisic from AC Milan, Chris Richards from Crystal Palace, Tim Weah from Marseille, and Tyler Adams from Bournemouth, all of whom are dealing with injuries. Additionally, high-profile midfielder Weston McKennie was excluded due to ongoing changes at Juventus.

Pochettino previously stated that no roster spot for the 2026 World Cup is guaranteed. In light of Tuesday’s victory, he expressed his contentment with the progress made during the November camp.

“I am genuinely pleased because the reality is far better than what you might think. Much improved compared to before,” Pochettino stated, now unbeaten in five matches. “Certainly, there is more work ahead, but it’s essential to keep believing and pushing forward.”

The recent match saw first international goals from Alex Freeman, Sebastian Berhalter, and Tanner Tessmann. Freeman, son of former NFL player Antonio Freeman, stood out as the player of the match, scoring two goals for the U.S. team.

“It’s our responsibility to assess the potential of our players. To do that, we must give them opportunities and observe their performance, character, and mentality,” Pochettino said regarding Freeman’s development on the international stage.

“I’m thrilled, especially since he scored twice today. Analyzing his playstyle reveals his versatility; he can operate as a third center back, move forward, and shift inside. When he has the ball, the team feels a sense of relief.”

As 2025 comes to a close on a positive note, Pochettino and his squad are set to return in 2026 for two friendlies in March, before commencing final preparations for the World Cup, which they will jointly host with Mexico and Canada next summer.
