Quinten Timber and Sem Steijn s Reactions to Captaincy Changes at FeyenoordQuinten Timber and Sem Steijn s Reactions to Captaincy Changes at Feyenoord

Quinten Timber currently holds a contract with Feyenoord that is nearing its expiration, which contributed to his relinquishing of the captaincy last summer. Notably, head coach Robin van Persie appointed summer acquisition Sem Steijn as the new captain; however, Steijn has since lost the armband as well. Timber has publicly shared his dissatisfaction with Van Persie’s decision.

In an interview with De Telegraaf, Timber reflected on Van Persie’s choice to strip him of the captaincy, stating that it was a difficult adjustment. “Of course, it affects you both as a person and as a footballer when you are no longer the captain. It is a tremendous honor to wear that armband. However, I quickly set it aside to fully concentrate on my game. For me, that topic is now closed.”

As Timber faced this setback at the beginning of the season, it has become apparent that Sem Steijn has also been disheartened by Van Persie’s recent decision to hand the captaincy to Timon Wellenreuther. Following the announcement from the technical staff, Steijn’s reaction was far from enthusiastic. “Sem was indeed disappointed, but it was my decision,” emphasized coach Robin van Persie, as reported by Voetbal International.

Van Persie elaborated, stating, “Sem reflected on this and decided to focus on himself, his recovery, and his individual performance. That is his prerogative; however, had he remained captain, we would have had four captains: Timon, Sem, Anis, and Givairo. Due to Sem’s choice, we now have only three.”
