RB Leipzig’s captain, David Raum, found himself reflecting on a familiar predicament following his team’s recent loss to Bayern Munich. At the beginning of the season, after a crushing defeat by Bayern at the Allianz Arena, Raum had stated that his team had been “punched in the mouth.”

As Leipzig commenced the 2025/26 Bundesliga Rück-Runde at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday, the initial outlook appeared promising. Leipzig dominated the first half, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.

However, the second half saw the German league leaders respond emphatically, netting five goals and leaving Leipzig reeling after a 1-5 home defeat. Questions arise regarding Leipzig’s eagerness to face Bayern again in the upcoming DFB Pokal quarterfinals.

Head coach Marco Werner reflected on the match, stating, “We delivered an almost perfect performance in the first half. The only aspect lacking was our effectiveness in front of goal. We should have had a more substantial lead at halftime. Until the 80th minute, we had the opportunity to secure points or even a victory, but Bayern’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made two exceptional saves. When you create chances against Bayern, you must capitalize on them.”

Raum, speaking in the mixed zone, noted, “Today’s result has two sides. The first 70 minutes were commendable; we played with courage, regained possession, and created opportunities. Nevertheless, we endured a significant defeat at home, which should not occur. We need to critically analyze this performance. We lost our composure, and it’s essential that we hold ourselves accountable.”
