Goals from Assan Ouédraogo and Xaver Schlager propelled RB Leipzig to a 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen, allowing the Red Bulls to reclaim second place in the Bundesliga.

The match commenced with a fiercely contested first 20 minutes, with both teams showcasing their attacking prowess. Antonio Nusa unleashed a powerful shot that was comfortably caught by Bremen’s goalkeeper, Mio Backhaus, while David Raum’s free-kick narrowly sailed over the crossbar. Senne Lynen also came close with a volley that went just wide after a precise setup from Romano Schmid.

As the first half progressed, Leipzig began to dominate possession, effectively limiting Bremen’s opportunities. The most significant chance of the half occurred in the 25th minute when Ridle Baku found himself in an unmarked position on the right side of the box but was unable to convert, dragging his shot wide.

Five minutes later, Ouédraogo tested Backhaus with a long-range effort that required a good save. The newly capped Germany international followed up with another shot that forced Backhaus to react again, leading to a series of corners for Leipzig. One such corner resulted in a chance for Christoph Baumgartner, whose weak attempt was easily saved.

Backhaus continued to impress, executing a remarkable save just before halftime. Baumgartner’s deflected shot seemed destined for the far post until Backhaus made a crucial leap to avert danger.

After halftime, Bremen appeared revitalized, creating early opportunities. Within minutes, Schmid forced a solid save from Péter Gulácsi, and a subsequent corner found Keke Topp at the far post, though his header struck the side netting. Cameron Puertas also tested Gulácsi shortly afterward.

Leipzig regained their rhythm around the hour mark but were nearly caught off guard by a defense-splitting pass that sent Jens Stage through on goal, only for Yan Diomande to make a crucial tackle to thwart the attack. Baumgartner was later denied by fellow Austrian Marco Grüll on the goal line, preventing Leipzig from taking the lead.

The breakthrough finally came when Ouédraogo unleashed an incredible shot from 20 yards with his weaker left foot, finding the top-left corner and leaving Backhaus with no chance. With just 10 minutes remaining, Leipzig doubled their advantage as Baumgartner won a header from a corner, the ball falling to substitute Schlager, who skillfully turned his marker and fired into the bottom corner.

Leipzig managed to maintain their lead as Bremen searched for a goal to ignite a potential comeback. Although the final scoreline suggests a comfortable victory for Leipzig, it belies the reality of a match where Bremen created several excellent chances and could have easily secured a different outcome.
