Following a lengthy summer of negotiations, during which powerful clubs like Bayern Munich entered the fray, Real Betis fulfilled its ambition of acquiring Antony as a permanent player. The Brazilian had impressed during his half-season loan at Benito Villamarín, but the financial demands surrounding his transfer made him nearly unattainable for the Verdiblancos. The club’s sports management, led by Manu Fajardo, had to employ creativity and resources to secure their primary goal—an operation that Fajardo recalls as exceedingly complex.

“Since taking office, and perhaps throughout my time in the football world, the signing of Antony has been the most challenging. This is partly due to the type of club and the different contexts in which I have worked, such as Rayo and Levante, which had their own financial limitations leading to complex transactions. However, without a doubt, Antony’s transfer stands out as the most difficult—not only in my time at Betis but throughout my career. He is a player for whom a top club like Manchester United recently paid 100 million euros. In just six months at Betis, he performed exceptionally well and was called back to the Brazilian national team. There were significant clubs competing for him, and these were undoubtedly challenging moments,” Fajardo remarked in an exclusive interview with MARCA.

For Betis, having a player of Antony’s caliber provides numerous attacking solutions within Manuel Pellegrini’s system. However, Antony’s inclusion extends beyond just athletic performance. It is accompanied by a comprehensive marketing plan, including the launch of a product line featuring the player’s famous ‘Iluminado’ slogan, in partnership with the club. Most importantly, it allows Betis to position itself in a higher-tier market due to the ‘pull effect’ created among prominent players seeking new opportunities.

“I believe this is crucial for many reasons. While we can all see the immediate sporting benefits of having a player like Antony, we must delve deeper into the broader implications. His presence enhances Betis as a brand. I am convinced that, in terms of marketing and ticket sales, Antony’s association with this club will create a very positive impact,” Fajardo explained. “Additionally, when it comes to entering the market—not just for players but also in collaborations with clubs—we can be pleased that every time a transfer window opens, major clubs reach out to Real Betis with clear intentions of establishing partnerships,” he concluded.
