Xabi Alonso stated that Real Madrid’s 4-3 victory against Olympiacos in the Champions League was crucial for altering the team’s trajectory following three consecutive matches without a win, which had put both the team and the coach under significant pressure.

Kylian Mbappé showcased his extraordinary talent by scoring four goals, including a remarkable hat trick in just seven minutes, while Vinícius Júnior contributed with two assists. This victory brought Madrid’s points total to 12, solidifying their position among the top eight teams in the league.

Entering the match in Greece, Madrid had recently suffered a defeat to Liverpool and drawn with Rayo Vallecano and Elche, which sparked criticism of Alonso’s tactical decisions and raised concerns about the coach’s rapport with key players.

“Today was crucial for changing the dynamics,” Alonso told Movistar. “It was vital for our qualification from the league phase, especially given the current challenges we are facing. We are all united and aware that this season will be long and demanding, presenting various situations. There are moments that require perseverance, and today signifies a step forward.”

The relationship between Alonso and Vinícius has come under scrutiny, particularly as the talented forward has been benched four times this season and reacted strongly after being substituted in last month’s El Clásico.

“It’s unfortunate that Vinícius’ goal was disallowed,” Alonso remarked during the post-match press conference. “We had specifically discussed that type of play, and it would have been a classic goal for him.”

Alonso also commended Mbappé for his “personality” and “leadership,” noting that his influence and intangible qualities are fundamental to the team’s cohesion.

Mbappé currently leads as the top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League this season.

“There are areas for improvement, certainly,” Mbappé told Movistar. “I understand that discussions occur outside the club, which is normal when playing for Real Madrid. We need to protect our players, the coach, and the staff. We are all in this together. While I won’t claim we are at odds with external opinions, we remain united. I know the fans support us.”
