Real Sociedad Aims to Rebound Against GetafeReal Sociedad Aims to Rebound Against Getafe

On Friday, Real Sociedad will meet Getafe once again, following a significant 0-3 defeat inflicted by Bordalás’s team at Anoeta nearly a year ago. This match marked the beginning of a downturn for the txuriurdin under Imanol Alguacil, a decline that has yet to be reversed.

At the time of their previous encounter, Real Sociedad had experienced minimal losses across LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Europa League. Just two weeks before facing Getafe, they concluded the first half of the regular season in seventh place with 30 points, trailing Villarreal and Mallorca by only two points, who were fifth and sixth respectively. This position changed slightly after suffering a 0-1 loss at Mestalla as the second half of the season began.

The 0-3 defeat to Getafe in San Sebastián, where they arrived just one point above the relegation zone, was a severe setback for the txuriurdin. It raised questions about the viability of Imanol’s project, especially as the team subsequently recorded four more losses in six matches, dropping to eleventh place, which, despite a poor end to the league, turned out to be not the worst outcome.

Since that heavy home defeat to Getafe, Real Sociedad managed only five victories in the subsequent 17 matches. Following the departures of Imanol Alguacil and Martín Zubimendi, this troubling trend continued throughout the remainder of the year, with the team winning only four out of 18 matches in the current 2025-26 season, accumulating a total of nine victories in 35 games.

Overcoming Getafe away from home would not only level them at 21 points in the standings but also serve as a vital step to halt the downward trend in results. A win would build on their recent draw against Atlético de Madrid and provide a much-needed boost as they strive to distance themselves from the relegation zone.
