Remembering Colin McDonald A Goalkeeping LegendRemembering Colin McDonald A Goalkeeping Legend

Colin McDonald, a distinguished goalkeeper for Burnley and the England national team, has passed away at the age of 95.

Born in Bury in October 1930, McDonald made his debut for Burnley in 1954, ultimately achieving a remarkable total of 201 appearances for the club.

He represented England in all four matches during the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, earning a total of eight international caps throughout his career. In response to his passing, Burnley expressed their profound sadness.

McDonald began his journey with Burnley as an amateur in July 1948, primarily playing for the reserve team until he was called up for National Service in 1950. Upon returning to Turf Moor under a professional contract in 1952, he quickly established himself as the club’s primary goalkeeper, remaining a key figure for several seasons.

After overcoming a broken ankle sustained against Chelsea in December 1956, he made his international debut in 1958, just prior to the World Cup.

During the tournament, England faced early elimination at the hands of the USSR in a play-off, following group matches against the Soviets, Brazil, and Austria.

Unfortunately, McDonald endured a significant injury the following year when he broke his leg during a match for the Football League against the Irish League in Dublin. Complications and pneumonia further delayed his recovery, as noted by Burnley.

He ultimately retired from professional football in May 1961, thereafter transitioning into coaching and administrative roles within the sport.
