Cameron Knowles is poised to make his inaugural marquee signing as head coach with the acquisition of Rodríguez, who adds a much-needed layer of creativity and dynamism to Minnesota United’s midfield. The former Real Madrid standout has signed a short-term contract with the Loons, who concluded last season ranking fourth in the Western Conference but faced elimination in the conference semifinals.

When discussing his decision to join Minnesota over other high-profile teams in warmer climates, Rodríguez stated, “It’s the club that moved forward the most, it’s the club that wants me. When people want you, you have to give everything for them. You have to be fully focused here, train really well, and be ready to help.”

Rodríguez also reflected on his current career phase, saying, “I’m in a unique and important stage of my career – I have the World Cup, I can’t fail. I have to do things right, and I’m very focused. This opportunity was one of the main reasons I chose to come here. The World Cup inspires my performance, and I aim to excel in Minnesota, fostering a mutual understanding between myself and the team.”

Interestingly, this signing marks a shift for Minnesota United, which was one of the least possession-oriented teams in MLS last season. The addition of the Colombian international, who has represented top clubs such as Real Madrid, Monaco, Porto, Bayern Munich, and Everton, could significantly alter their playing style.

Rodríguez had garnered interest from various clubs, including Liga de Quito and Barcelona SC in Ecuador, as well as Estudiantes de La Plata and Banfield, where he previously played. Ultimately, he chose to join MLS to prepare himself optimally for the World Cup, where Colombia is placed in a challenging group alongside Uzbekistan and Portugal, with one additional team emerging from a playoff involving Jamaica, Congo, and New Caledonia.

“I come from a strong, physical league [Liga MX],” he explained. “Last July, I played against several MLS teams in the Leagues Cup, and they were tough, physical sides. Football remains consistent across borders; adapting to new environments is essential. I am here to integrate into the group and align with the coach’s vision. Adaptation is a process that varies in duration, but when you are skilled, it eases the transition.”

He further emphasized his eagerness to contribute, stating, “I wanted this league; I wanted to play here. The negotiations took time, but it came to fruition. When there’s mutual trust, you have to commit fully so that everyone feels valued. My goal is to help the team win – victory is my priority.”

Rodríguez also acknowledged the possibility of extending his stay in MLS, noting, “The initial agreement is for six months with an option for another six. Many factors will influence this decision, and we’ll reassess after the World Cup to determine the best path forward for both parties. An extension beyond twelve months remains a possibility.”

This signing follows the acquisition of forward Marcus Caldeira, who has signed a one-year deal through 2026, and Mauricio González from Deportes Tolima in Colombia’s top division. Additionally, Knowles embarks on his tenure as head coach following the departure of Eric Ramsay, who has taken a position in the EFL Championship.

Minnesota United is set to commence their season on February 21 with an away match against Austin FC.
