Cristiano Ronaldo did not participate in the latest match as he served a suspension. The 40-year-old striker received the first red card of his international career during a defeat against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin, coinciding with his record-extending 226th cap.

The Al-Nassr forward was dismissed for elbowing Irish defender Dara O’Shea. It remains uncertain if FIFA will impose an additional two-match ban, which could impact his participation in the upcoming World Cup scheduled to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Ronaldo is eager to avoid any further absences as he pursues the milestone of 1,000 career goals and additional major titles. He missed the chance to contribute during Portugal’s recent match against Armenia, where Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick, leading Portugal to a resounding 9-1 victory.

Portugal’s President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, spoke to reporters about the mixed emotions Ronaldo likely felt while watching from the sidelines: “Ronaldo always has a place in our hearts. He is part of our gratitude. He must be extremely disappointed for not being present today. It is unfortunate he missed a crucial game for our captain, but that is how geniuses are.”

De Sousa also praised the national team’s coach, Roberto Martínez, for overcoming initial skepticism. He recalled their first dinner together, where players dined separately from Martínez, who ultimately earned their respect: “He persevered and brought us to this point, albeit with some challenges, but a 9-1 victory is a joy for all of us.”

He expressed elation over Portugal’s spectacular qualification for the 2026 World Cup, stating, “This is the game of my life and that of many Portuguese. While we’ve had more thrilling victories, a scoreline of 9-1 is truly extraordinary. It could have been even higher. The team’s performance was spirited, classy, and fast. It was a unique experience, especially for the many children present, who will remember this match.”

De Sousa noted that the medal ceremony for the recent Nations League victory coincided with this remarkable win, calling it a fortuitous combination: “We celebrated the Nations League victory today, concluding a cycle that began with Euro 2016 and culminating in this qualification.”

With the World Cup on the horizon, plans are being formulated for another attempt at international glory. The consensus is that Portugal boasts significant talent, including players like Ronaldo, Fernandes, Joao Felix, Ruben Dias, Joao Neves, and Vitinha, positioning them as strong contenders for the prestigious trophy.

De Sousa is determined to witness their journey, stating, “Absolutely. I firmly believe that in America, Portugal will succeed. Will I watch the games? If invited, I will attend. If not, I am prepared to purchase a ticket to see one or two matches myself.”

Ronaldo promptly congratulated the team after they secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup. He acknowledged that this tournament may be his final appearance on the international stage, yet he believes he has a couple of productive years ahead before contemplating retirement, as he continues his contract with Al-Nassr until 2027.
