Ronaldo’s Discontent in Saudi Arabia: A Look at His Future

Cristiano Ronaldo has been residing in the Middle East since 2023, following a groundbreaking transition as a free agent after his surprising release from Manchester United. His contract, reportedly the most lucrative in the world of football, is currently under negotiation in Riyadh.

However, the 41-year-old remains unsettled, voicing concerns over what he perceives as an inequitable allocation of financial resources within Saudi Arabia. He did not participate in a recent derby against Al-Riyadh and may also miss an anticipated clash against Al-Ittihad on Friday.

Former England international Alan Shearer, the all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League, commented on Ronaldo’s actions, stating: “Not many individuals earning over £400,000 a day choose to go on strike. It must be a privileged position to assert one’s unwillingness to work at such a salary. It’s perplexing when considered in that context. While he is undoubtedly a superstar, going on strike at this level does not reflect well on him.”

The Saudi Pro League has reminded Ronaldo that no player, regardless of their stature, is above the game itself. They emphasized that each team in the Middle East operates autonomously, with transfer funds sourced from individual investors rather than the Public Investment Fund (PIF) covering all expenses.

A detailed statement directed toward Ronaldo included the assertion: “Like any elite competitor, he aspires to win. However, no single individual—regardless of their significance—can dictate decisions beyond their own club.”

Despite sharing the pitch with notable players such as Sadio Mane, Joao Felix, and Kingsley Coman at Al-Nassr, Ronaldo has expressed frustration over the recruitment strategies of rival teams in the Saudi Pro League. Notably, his former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema has switched from Al-Ittihad to Al-Hilal.

Concerns about Ronaldo’s future are mounting. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano provided updates on his YouTube channel, stating, “Cristiano remains discontent with the situation. As I mentioned previously, let’s not jump to conclusions about him moving to MLS or breaking his contract. For now, it’s important to remain calm. However, I can confirm that Cristiano Ronaldo will not participate in the crucial match on Friday, not due to injury or fitness issues, but rather because of his dissatisfaction with the management of the Saudi group, particularly the PIF, overseeing several clubs in the region.”

Romano further clarified, “I’m not here to speak on behalf of Ronaldo; his representatives will provide clarity. Likewise, Al-Nassr will also offer insights. My role is to convey the information I receive, and presently it indicates that Cristiano is unhappy with the current circumstances and recent transfer activities.”

While Romano is cautious about speculating on Ronaldo’s next move, various potential destinations are being considered. A return to Sporting CP has been suggested, alongside interest from various European clubs. Additionally, there are discussions around the possibility of Sir David Beckham facilitating a union between Ronaldo and his long-time rival Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, the MLS Cup champions—marking a historic collaboration of these two legendary figures for the first time in their careers.
