Wayne Rooney has recommended that Arne Slot consider benching Mohamed Salah to help reignite Liverpool’s performance amidst a challenging season.

Following a 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, the defending champions currently sit in 11th place in the Premier League, trailing leaders Arsenal by 11 points. Salah did not contribute any goals or assists in this match, which marked Liverpool’s sixth loss in their last seven league fixtures.

Liverpool has faced a particularly tough stretch, conceding six goals without reply in their last two matches against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City.

“Salah is not providing defensive support,” Rooney stated during an episode of The Wayne Rooney Show. “I can imagine that if you are one of the new signings sitting on the bench, watching a teammate who isn’t putting in the effort—it raises questions. While I acknowledge Salah’s legendary status at the club, it sends a poor message if he is starting every game without running back.

“If I were in Slot’s position, I would make a significant decision to impact the rest of the team. In times of struggle, it’s crucial to remain compact and difficult to beat. While they are navigating this rough patch, Slot must make adjustments to foster a cohesive and resilient team, with every player committed to their responsibilities. Once they begin to secure victories, Salah could be reinstated, hopefully with renewed effort. I truly believe that this approach would positively influence the team.”

Rooney’s criticism extended beyond Salah, as he also highlighted the underwhelming performances of several senior players. He noted, “The team has not performed well at all, and this criticism isn’t limited to van Dijk and Salah. I would expect more from the leaders in the squad, including players like Mac Allister and Gravenberch, who need to step up and rally the team to regain winning form.”

Rooney also mentioned the tragic situation involving Diogo Jota, suggesting that it might have impacted the team’s morale. “They are undoubtedly going through a difficult time. One must consider how the unfortunate incident involving Jota has affected the players. He is a teammate, and such events can take a toll on the squad’s emotional state.”
