Liam Rosenior is set to manage his inaugural game with Chelsea on Saturday evening, as the team travels across London to face Charlton Athletic in the third round of the FA Cup. This match presents an opportunity for the former Strasbourg coach to explore his squad’s depth and provide a fresh start for players looking to make an impression on their new manager, who recently succeeded Enzo Maresca.

Maresca had expressed concerns regarding limitations in squad selection and constraints on managing player minutes during critical moments in matches. In contrast, Rosenior has assured that he will have the autonomy to make key decisions, while also emphasizing his commitment to fostering a young, dynamic core within the team.

Chelsea currently boasts the youngest squad in the Premier League, a fact that has drawn criticism in the past due to its perceived lack of experience, which has hindered the team’s ability to mount serious title challenges. Though Maresca managed to secure the Conference League and the Club World Cup during his tenure, he was ultimately dismissed from his position.

The Chelsea management has turned to Rosenior, who is familiar to them from his time in Ligue 1, to breathe new life into the team and enhance its consistency. Rosenior is confident in his ability to lead the team to success, even if it involves revisiting established methods.

As he prepares for the match at The Valley, Rosenior expressed his admiration for Chelsea, stating, “I was a Manchester United fan and I am now massively a Chelsea fan. I remember Sir Alex Ferguson was brave enough to put six or seven players aged between 19 and 21 into a title-winning team because he believed in them. They grew and won trophy after trophy. It was an amazing period in that club’s history. Without that bravery, it doesn’t happen. There is potential for that here.”

He highlighted key young players such as Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Cole Palmer, and Reece James, referring to them as “world-class players and still very, very young.”

Rosenior sees parallels between the Strasbourg team he previously coached and the current Chelsea squad. He remarked, “If you watched the Strasbourg team I coached, everyone enjoyed watching them because they played with intensity. Why? Because they were young, fit, and less prone to injury. I’m going to work really hard to create that here.”

He acknowledged the importance of proper training and player welfare, stating that he intends to collaborate closely with the medical team to ensure the players’ longevity and success. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about the team’s potential to contend for major titles soon, asserting, “If I thought it was impossible to win with this group, I wouldn’t have come.”

Chelsea continues to pursue silverware across all competitions, starting their FA Cup journey on Saturday. In the league, however, the Blues are currently 18 points behind leaders Arsenal, rendering them effectively out of the title race. They have the chance to challenge Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, while also aiming to secure a place in the knockout rounds of the Champions League, despite the possibility of settling for a playoff position.
