Ruben Amorim Addresses Challenges at Manchester United Amid Ronaldo’s Comments

Ruben Amorim, who is nine days older than Ronaldo, responded ahead of United’s match against Tottenham on Saturday. He avoided directly criticizing Ronaldo but emphasized the importance of focusing on the future. Amorim stated that the club has made mistakes but is now committed to meaningful structural change. He urged the team and supporters to “look forward” rather than continually reflect on past failures.

Ronaldo expressed sadness over Manchester United’s current struggles. After leaving the club in 2009 for Real Madrid, he returned from Juventus in 2021. However, his contract was terminated in November 2022 after he publicly criticized the club and former manager Erik ten Hag. Ronaldo stated that Manchester United remains one of the biggest clubs in the world and holds deep personal meaning for him. Yet, he believes the club has lacked proper direction in recent years.

Amorim took charge in November 2024. He guided Manchester United to the Europa League final last season, though they did not win the trophy and missed qualification for this year’s Champions League. Their 15th-place finish was the club’s worst league result since the 1973-74 relegation season. Despite spending over £200 million in the summer, the new season started poorly, including an early Carabao Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby Town.

However, recent performances have shown progress. Manchester United have won three of their last four league matches, including a major victory over Liverpool. They now sit eighth in the Premier League.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has publicly backed Amorim, stating that he needs three years to reshape the squad. Ratcliffe acknowledged that the club has struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson retired and believes the rebuild requires patience.
