Ruben Amorim has expressed that Manchester United is currently far from being competitive at the top of the Premier League table after their 1-0 loss to 10-man Everton on Monday.

United had the opportunity to ascend into the Champions League spots with a victory over David Moyes’ team at Old Trafford. However, it was Everton who secured all three points, despite Idrissa Gueye receiving a red card just 13 minutes into the match for an altercation with teammate Michael Keane.

In his post-match comments, Amorim stated that his team “deserved to lose” and revealed that, despite a recent improvement in performances, he remains “afraid” of a repeat of last season, during which a series of poor results left United in 15th place.

“We are not there, not even near the point we should be to contend for the best positions in the league,” Amorim remarked. “Over the past five weeks, everyone has praised our evolution, but I keep reiterating the same message: we are still far from where we ought to be as a club.

“I fear returning to the feelings of last season, and that is my foremost concern.”

Amorim expressed disappointment with his players, stating he envied the determination shown by Everton, even if it resulted in Gueye’s dismissal. He emphasized the importance of cultivating a similar fighting spirit within his squad as they prepare for training at Carrington on Tuesday.

“Fighting is not a negative aspect,” Amorim noted. “It does not imply that players dislike each other; rather, it signifies a commitment to preventing goals when the ball is lost. That was the sentiment I felt while watching the match.

“I hope my players show that same tenacity when they lose possession. It is a positive trait.

“In many previous matches, my players have demonstrated their capabilities. Unfortunately, today we fell short. However, I remain optimistic that we will improve in the future. We are genuinely frustrated at this moment.

“We have training tomorrow, and we will focus on preparing for the next match.”

Following the defeat to Everton, United currently sits in 10th place in the Premier League and will face Crystal Palace away on November 30.
