Ruben Amorim stated that Manchester United is far from being able to contend at the top of the Premier League table, following their 1-0 loss to 10-man Everton on Monday.

United had the opportunity to move into the Champions League spots with a victory against David Moyes’ team at Old Trafford. However, it was Everton who secured all three points, despite the early dismissal of Idrissa Gueye after just 13 minutes for a foul on teammate Michael Keane.

Amorim remarked that his team “deserved to lose” and acknowledged that, despite a recent positive run of performances, he remains “afraid” of a repeat of last season, when a succession of poor results led to a 15th-place finish.

“We are not there; we are not even close to the level required to compete for the top positions in the league,” Amorim said. “Over the past five weeks, everyone has praised our evolution, but I consistently express the same sentiment. We are not where we should be as a club.

“I fear returning to the feelings we experienced last season, and that is my primary concern.”

Amorim expressed disappointment in his players, stating that he envied the determination shown by the Everton team, even if it resulted in Gueye’s red card.

He urged his squad to display a similar fighting spirit when they regroup for training on Tuesday at Carrington.

“Fighting is not a negative aspect,” Amorim stated. “It does not imply that players dislike one another. It means that if you lose the ball, you must fight to regain it to prevent a goal. That was the sentiment I had while watching the match.

“I hope my players will be willing to challenge each other when they lose possession. That reaction is a healthy one, not a detrimental one.

“Once again, my players have demonstrated in various matches that we can perform well. However, today, we did not meet that standard. We are determined to improve moving forward. Today, we are understandably frustrated.

“We have training scheduled for tomorrow, and we will prepare for the next match.”

Currently, United sits 10th in the Premier League standings following the loss to Everton and will next face Crystal Palace away on November 30.
