Ruben Amorim Departs Manchester United After Brief TenureRuben Amorim Departs Manchester United After Brief Tenure

Ruben Amorim assumed management of Manchester United in November 2024, succeeding Erik ten Hag in a high-profile Premier League role. However, his tenure was brief, lasting only 63 matches, during which the team secured 24 victories, resulting in a disappointing win ratio of 38 percent.

In a concise statement released on the club’s official website, United announced: “With Manchester United positioned sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly decided that now is the appropriate time to implement a change. This decision aims to optimize the team’s potential for a higher finish in the league. The club extends its gratitude to Ruben for his contributions and wishes him well in his future endeavors.”

Amorim was relieved of his duties shortly after expressing concerns regarding the level of support from United’s board. Following a 1-1 draw at Elland Road, he indicated his intention to fulfill his contract until 2027 before departing.

He stated, “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not just the head coach. While I may not be as renowned as [Antonio] Conte, [Thomas] Tuchel, or [Jose] Mourinho, I hold the position of manager here. I plan to remain for 18 months or until the board decides on a change. I have no intention of resigning; I will perform my role until a successor is appointed.”

He further asserted, “I want to emphasize that I am here to manage the team, not merely coach it. I was clear about my role, and it will conclude in 18 months, after which we will all move on. That is the agreement; that is my responsibility. In all areas, including the scouting department, the sporting director must fulfill their roles while I do mine for the next 18 months.”

Reports indicate that Amorim’s dismissal did not stem from power struggles or ultimatums, as the 40-year-old had the backing of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his associates during challenging times.

United believes that their young, talented squad is well positioned to meet the club’s objectives this season. The decision to part ways with Amorim aims to provide this capable and committed group with the best opportunity for success.

The Red Devils continue to strategically evolve their squad, having invested significantly in recent transfer windows, with Amorim involved in the recruitment process and more additions expected by 2026. United prides itself on having an expert leadership team that enables the club to operate at the highest level. The head coach’s role is vital within the Red Devils’ ecosystem, with interdepartmental collaboration essential for future success.

Currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, United will return to action on Wednesday with a match against Burnley. The club has confirmed that former midfielder and current U18 head coach Darren Fletcher will take charge of first-team affairs on an interim basis.

Fletcher is viewed as a leading candidate for the permanent role, with other contenders including Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, former United star Michael Carrick, and recently dismissed Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.
