Ruben Amorim Reflects on Manchester United s Struggles Following Defeat to EvertonRuben Amorim Reflects on Manchester United s Struggles Following Defeat to Everton

Ruben Amorim stated that Manchester United is far from being competitive at the top of the Premier League after their recent 1-0 defeat to ten-man Everton on Monday.

Despite an opportunity to ascend into the Champions League spots with a victory over David Moyes’ squad at Old Trafford, it was Everton who secured all three points, even after Idrissa Gueye was sent off just 13 minutes into the match for a foul on teammate Michael Keane.

In a post-match interview, Amorim acknowledged that his team “deserved to lose” and, despite a string of encouraging performances lately, expressed apprehension about a potential repeat of last season’s struggles, which saw United finish in 15th place.

“We are not there, not even close to where we should be to contend for the top positions in the league,” Amorim remarked. “While many are praising our progress over the past five weeks, I maintain that we have yet to reach the level expected of us at this club.”

“I am fearful of returning to the feelings we experienced last season. That is my primary concern,” he added.

Amorim expressed disappointment in his players, citing envy towards Everton’s determination, even if it resulted in Gueye’s dismissal. He urged his squad to adopt a similar mindset during their training session at Carrington on Tuesday.

“Fighting is not inherently negative,” Amorim stated. “It doesn’t imply a lack of camaraderie. It involves effort when losing the ball to prevent conceding. That was my impression while watching the match.

“I hope my players display that fighting spirit, even towards one another, when we lose possession. It is a positive trait, not a negative one.”

“On numerous occasions, my players have demonstrated that we possess the capability to succeed. However, today we did not live up to that standard. We are frustrated, but I believe we will improve in the future.”

Following their loss to Everton, United is currently positioned 10th in the Premier League and will face Crystal Palace away on November 30.
