Sadiq Umar’s Impact in Real Sociedad’s Recent Match

Sadiq Umar once again proved decisive for Real Sociedad. He earned a crucial penalty in the match against Elche, which Mikel Oyarzabal converted to make it 1-1. This was Umar’s first direct impact on a match result in 20 months. The last time he influenced a comeback was on March 9, 2024, when he scored in the 2-3 win over Granada.

Loan to Valencia and Transfer Uncertainty

During this period, Umar was more visible because of his successful loan spell at Valencia in the second half of last season, where he scored six goals. Before that loan, his role at Real Sociedad had been limited.

This summer, there was long-running speculation about a permanent return to Valencia. However, the club did not activate its purchase option, and Real Sociedad also rejected higher offers from elsewhere. Umar remained on the transfer list and even started the preseason without a squad number. Disagreements over his future with club president Jokin Aperribay made the situation more difficult. Umar pushed for Valencia, but their proposal did not meet Real Sociedad’s financial expectations.

Failed Moves and Limited Minutes

Real Sociedad tried to transfer him until the final hours of the summer window. A late move to the UAE also failed. Eventually, Umar was given a squad number, but his involvement remained limited. He only appeared in late-game moments against Mallorca and Barcelona.

After Karrikaburu’s injury, Umar received more minutes in the Copa del Rey match against Negreira, although he missed two clear chances. Even so, coach Sergio Francisco called on him again against Elche.

Impact Against Elche

Umar entered the match in the 64th minute and showed determination and movement in the attack. In the 88th minute, he earned a penalty, which Oyarzabal converted to secure a 1-1 draw.

This marked Umar’s first decisive contribution to a Real Sociedad result since March 2024.
