Sagoe Jr’s Journey: From Arsenal Academy to International Potential

At the age of 12, Sagoe Jr joined Arsenal after spending a couple of seasons in Fulham’s academy. He has since progressed through the Hale End program to the first team and is currently on his second professional contract, which has 18 months remaining.

Over the past two seasons, the promising young attacker has experienced both challenges and successes. In 2023, he participated in Arsenal’s summer tour in the United States, where he played in a match against Bournemouth in Los Angeles. Shortly thereafter, he made his senior debut under manager Mikel Arteta in a 1-0 victory over Brentford in the Carabao Cup.

“That memory will always live with me,” he reminisced. “As a child, I grew up watching Arsenal, so it was a tremendous honor to wear the shirt and play alongside talents like Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Ødegaard. I am forever grateful to the manager for trusting me to start in that game, and winning made it even more special. It’s a moment I’ll cherish forever.”

Following his debut, Sagoe Jr appeared primed to advance his career, making his Championship and League One debuts during loan spells at Swansea City and Shrewsbury Town. However, these experiences did not yield the playing time he had anticipated.

This season, he has taken the opportunity to reset his career with Arsenal’s Under-21 team, where he has excelled, scoring five goals and providing five assists in 12 matches across all competitions. His performances earned him a nomination for Premier League 2 Player of the Month in August, and he is now eager for more first-team opportunities, feeling a renewed sense of determination.

“I’ve had a very enjoyable campaign, contributing with goals and assists and striving to help the team win as many matches as possible,” he stated. “In today’s game, wingers are evaluated on their contributions; while beating defenders is important, the end product is crucial. Scoring and assisting means I’m fulfilling my role and positively influencing the team.”

Sagoe Jr further noted, “As one of the older players this year, I find myself in a new role, mentoring younger teammates and passing on my insights. I’ve genuinely enjoyed this transition, as it has allowed me to develop a different side of my character. Normally, I’m quite reserved, but I am embracing this responsibility.”

At just 21 years old, Sagoe Jr is at a pivotal juncture in his career. With 18 months left on his Arsenal contract, his current focus is on building upon a positive first half of the season with the Under-21s. However, with the January transfer window opening, there is a possibility of another loan move, which would allow him to further his development in senior football.

“I will certainly consult with my advisors to determine the best path forward,” he explained. “The loan experiences at Swansea and Shrewsbury provided invaluable lessons. Adapting to a new environment after being at Arsenal for so long can be challenging, but gaining match experience is key to building confidence.”

“Playing in competitive men’s environments, where every match matters, is a significant opportunity. For now, I will continue to focus on my training and apply myself diligently.”

Sagoe Jr’s impressive performances this season have caught the attention of the Liberian national team, which has called him up for the October international break. He qualifies for Liberia through his mother and could also represent Ghana through his father’s lineage. While he appreciates Liberia’s recognition, he is keeping his international options open for the time being.

“I feel fortunate to receive acknowledgment from both countries I represent,” he expressed. “Liberia is significant to my mother’s side, and I am grateful for the support I’ve received from them. I will continue to perform at my highest level, hoping it leads to more opportunities.”

Despite spending the season with the Under-21s, Sagoe Jr has had ample exposure to the first-team setup, often training with the senior squad and being included in the matchday roster for the Champions League fixture against Slavia Prague in November.

This experience has given him a close look at the dedication fueling Arsenal’s quest for trophies this season, as the team remains competitive across all four major competitions, currently leading both the Premier League and Champions League standings.

There is no room for complacency, as everyone is incredibly skilled both technically and physically. The environment is highly competitive, and you must always bring your best game. Mikel Arteta has set high expectations, focusing on executing every detail. It’s a fantastic environment for personal growth and pushing oneself to excel whenever I have the chance to join them.”
