The San Jose Quakes are actively seeking a new attacking player after the departure of key forwards Josef Martinez to Liga MX and Cristian Espinoza to Nashville. Timo Werner appears to be a fitting candidate, boasting an impressive scoring record in Europe, having netted 171 goals throughout his career, including 24 for the German national team. Notably, he holds the title of Leipzig’s all-time top goalscorer.

Currently, Werner is in need of a transfer as he has struggled for playing time this season at Leipzig, managing only three Bundesliga appearances and a mere 14 minutes on the pitch. Following a less than satisfactory loan spell with Tottenham in 2025, Leipzig has indicated that they would entertain offers for his permanent departure, although attempts to secure a move last summer were unsuccessful. His contract, valued at approximately €10 million per year, is set to expire next June.

This potential acquisition could mark the beginning of an active winter transfer window for San Jose, who are in the midst of a significant rebuild after losing two standout players. With one designated player (DP) slot still available, manager and sporting director Bruce Arena is keen to bolster the squad. Last season, the Quakes began strongly but faltered towards the end, finishing 10th in the Western Conference and missing out on a wildcard spot due to a tiebreaker with Real Salt Lake.

This move comes amidst a period of considerable activity in the Western Conference during the offseason. Several teams, including LAFC, have appointed new managers, while reigning regular-season champions San Diego are anticipated to revamp their lineup with star player Chucky Lozano expected to leave the club soon. The Quakes will kick off their season against Sporting Kansas City on February 21.
