Schlotterbeck Faces Career Defining Decision Amid Contract Talks with DortmundSchlotterbeck Faces Career Defining Decision Amid Contract Talks with Dortmund

According to a report from Bild, German centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck has turned down Borussia Dortmund’s latest contract offer and is becoming increasingly frustrated with the team’s playing style under coach Niko Kovac.

His current contract is in effect until 2027, yet reports indicate he is unlikely to agree to an extension, raising speculation about a potential transfer next summer. At just 25 years old, Schlotterbeck joined Dortmund from Freiburg in 2022 and has quickly established himself as one of the club’s key players, making 134 appearances across all competitions. Despite his significance to the team, uncertainty regarding his future is mounting.

Dortmund is reportedly preparing a new contract proposal that would extend his stay until 2030 and potentially triple his salary. Nevertheless, the German international has shown no inclination to commit to an extension at this time, preferring to keep his options open amid growing interest from prestigious European clubs, including Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

During a press conference ahead of Germany’s World Cup qualifying match against Luxembourg, fellow defender Jonathan Tah lauded Schlotterbeck’s talents and emphasized the importance of making a thoughtful decision. “This is an exciting situation for Nico,” said Tah. “He’s an outstanding player who continually strives for self-improvement. It’s a crucial point in his career, and I hope he makes the right decision for himself. Many doors are open for him, and I wish him all the best in this process.”

Tah also expressed his willingness to support Schlotterbeck if needed, stating, “If he seeks advice or wants to talk, I am here for him.”

Schlotterbeck has similarly praised Tah, referring to him as ‘a better defender’ and highlighting their effective partnership on the national team. “Jona is very communicative on the pitch and is vital for me. Defensively, he has excelled for years. While I focus more on the ball-playing aspect, he is a strong defender, which makes us a good fit together.”

Bayern Munich is closely monitoring Schlotterbeck’s situation as they look to enhance their defensive lineup for the upcoming season. With Dayot Upamecano’s contract expiring next year, Bayern could view Schlotterbeck as a younger replacement. Meanwhile, Liverpool is also in the hunt for defensive reinforcements, especially with Virgil van Dijk nearing the end of his career and uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konaté’s future, whose contract is set to expire this summer amid interest from Real Madrid.

With both Bayern and Liverpool in pursuit, Schlotterbeck faces a pivotal career decision. Dortmund is eager to retain his services. Last month, sporting director Lars Ricken addressed the situation, emphasizing that while the club respects Schlotterbeck’s hesitation, they wish to avoid prolonged negotiations.

“We will not rush into anything, but we also do not want to drag this out indefinitely; everyone is aware of that,” Ricken remarked to Sport Bild.

For the time being, Schlotterbeck will not participate in the national team’s upcoming match after withdrawing due to injury. His immediate priority is to recover swiftly and aid Dortmund in their quest to re-enter the title race, as the club currently sits third in the league, trailing Bayern and RB Leipzig, having secured six victories from ten matches.
