Sem Steijn s Captaincy at Feyenoord Under Review After Challenging StartSem Steijn s Captaincy at Feyenoord Under Review After Challenging Start

Sem Steijn was brought to Feyenoord last summer for approximately ten million euros. However, his first six months at the club have not been particularly successful. Adding to the pressure, the midfielder was appointed captain by coach Robin van Persie, a role that has proven to be demanding. It now appears that Steijn may be required to relinquish the captaincy after just half a year.

According to reports from Algemeen Dagblad, there are indications that Sem Steijn must once again prove himself. “Following his hamstring injury, Steijn appears fit and sharp in Spain, but the question remains whether he will retain his position as the leader of Feyenoord,” the publication notes. Notably, Van Persie has recently lauded goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther, praising him as a leader and commending his ability to translate the team’s playing style to the group.

Wellenreuther seems to be a significant contender for assuming the captaincy from Steijn. However, there may also be another option that Van Persie is considering. Another recent acquisition, Luciano Valente, has made a notable impression since his arrival last summer. According to former striker Geert den Ouden, Valente could indeed be suited to take on the captain’s role at Feyenoord. “Currently, three players are not fully meeting the expectations of a captain. This has been a topic of discussion. Perhaps Valente is the true new leader of this team. I don’t think that suggestion is out of place,” he previously stated in an interview with FC Rijnmond.
