Senegal has emerged as the champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, defeating Morocco 1-0 in a gripping final that took place on Sunday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

The match began with both teams displaying an intense pace characteristic of a continental final. Although regulation time ended in a 0-0 stalemate, Senegal secured victory during extra time.

In the sixth minute, Senegal’s Pape Gueye nearly opened the scoring with a well-timed corner, but Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, was quick to intervene and deny the attempt.

Morocco had an opportunity to take the lead shortly after in the 14th minute when Ismael Saibari, positioned just outside the box, misfired and sent his shot wide, much to the chagrin of his teammates.

The Lions of Teranga threatened again in the 38th minute. Iliman Ndiaye connected with a cross from the right wing, finding himself in a one-on-one against Bounou. However, the experienced goalkeeper made a crucial save, preventing Senegal from scoring just before halftime.

Brahim Diaz then crafted a precise pass into the box for Ayoub El Kaabi, whose shot went wide despite having a clear sight of goal, leaving Senegal’s goalkeeper Edouard Mendy relieved in the 58th minute.

Ezzalzouli had another chance for Morocco shortly thereafter, but his shot sailed over the bar, further frustrating the North African side.

In the 74th minute, a collision between Senegal’s El Hadji Malick Diouf and Morocco’s Neil El Aynaoui halted play for medical attention. Both players were able to continue following a brief delay.

As the match progressed, Ezzalzouli squandered another promising opportunity in the 81st minute, directing his shot at Mendy, who comfortably made the save.

In the third minute of added time, Senegal thought they had scored through Abdoulaye Seck, only to have the goal disallowed for a foul in the build-up. This decision sparked protests from the Senegalese players, while the Moroccan side celebrated the call.

Shortly after, the referee awarded Morocco a penalty following a VAR review when Diaz was brought down in the box. Tension escalated as the game was paused for over ten minutes while Senegal expressed their displeasure.

When play resumed, Mendy faced Diaz in the penalty shootout. The former Chelsea goalkeeper emerged victorious, saving the penalty and providing Senegal with a fresh opportunity.

Ultimately, it was Gueye who became the hero of the day, scoring the decisive goal that secured Senegal’s victory in front of a passionate crowd. His contribution, along with Mendy’s crucial penalty save, will be etched in the memories of Senegalese fans for generations to come.
