Sergio Ramos Reflects on Career Transition and Future AspirationsSergio Ramos Reflects on Career Transition and Future Aspirations

Sergio Ramos departed from Monterrey in December, having confirmed that his last match was the play-off semi-final loss against Toluca.

Following the defeat, Ramos stated, “I made it very clear last week. Obviously, yes – this is my last game.” He expressed the pain of losing in the semi-finals, noting, “Losing a semi-final always hurts, especially when you fall just short of a final.”

Reflecting on the match, the seasoned defender said, “There’s a lot to assess. We practically gave away the first half. We lacked intensity, rhythm, personality, and control of the ball. While it’s possible to lose in football, it should be by playing like we did in the second half, not the first, which we gifted to them.”

During his tenure at Monterrey, Ramos made 32 competitive appearances in 2025, scoring seven goals and receiving one red card. He is now determined to return to European football.

According to Radio MARCA, Ramos was expected to sign with Sevilla in La Liga. However, he is currently engaged in a bid to acquire the club, which prevents him from playing for them at this time. Reports suggest that an “exclusivity period has now been opened, during which both parties will review Sevilla’s financial accounts before attempting to finalize a definitive deal.” Ramos is collaborating with Argentine entrepreneur Martin Ink, the CEO of Five Eleven Capital, an American investment group focused on soccer. They have prior experience with Sevilla, as the club’s sporting director, Antonio Cordon, has worked with this investment group.

The proposal from Ramos and his associates is reportedly valued at over €400 million (£347 million/$474 million). However, he faces competition, with nine other parties expressing interest in acquiring Sevilla.

As he travels to Seville to “advance the acquisition process,” Ramos is also keeping his options open regarding potential contract offers for his playing career.

Currently, Marseille sits third in Ligue 1, nine points behind leaders PSG. Reports indicate that manager Roberto De Zerbi is not particularly keen on signing Ramos, although he has a history in France after playing for PSG from 2021 to 2023 before returning to his boyhood club, Sevilla. During his time in France, Ramos won Ligue 1 twice.

Additionally, there have been discussions regarding Wrexham as a potential option for Ramos, given the club’s Hollywood ownership by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Gaizka Mendieta, a former Real Madrid player, remarked, “Could we see Sergio Ramos at Wrexham? Once you leave Real Madrid and that top media spotlight, you have a lot of choices. He has made decisions based on personal connections and experiences, which may lead him to Wrexham. If it brings him happiness, it could be a beneficial move for him.”

Mendieta continued, “Wrexham is a huge story, followed even in Spain; it’s a romantic narrative and a global phenomenon. Having a Spanish player there would be special, and why not Sergio Ramos? Despite his interest in buying Sevilla, he is still a free agent and eager to play, making Wrexham a viable option.”
