Sevilla FC Faces Defensive Challenges Amid Injuries and SuspensionsSevilla FC Faces Defensive Challenges Amid Injuries and Suspensions

Sevilla FC has encountered yet another setback as they return to routine following a brief holiday break. Gabriel Suazo has sustained a new injury to the soleus muscle in his left leg. This marks his second injury; the first occurred just days before the derby, resulting in his absence from that match, the subsequent cup match against Extremadura, and their visit to Mestalla. He also missed fixtures against Oviedo and Alavés in the KO tournament but made his return in the latest match against Real Madrid.

The defensive line has required significant adjustments in these initial months of competition due to a combination of injuries and suspensions, leading to changes in formation and personnel. To enhance team solidity, the coach has reverted to a five-man defensive structure in recent games, although this approach is not his preferred style. Young player Oso seized his opportunity in Suazo’s absence, delivering a commendable performance. With Suazo back in the lineup at the Bernabéu, his position is once again open.

Meanwhile, Marcao’s absence due to a six-match suspension for a red card and remarks made to the referee has left another gap in the defense. His natural replacement is expected to be Kike Salas, though alternatives such as Castrín or Azpilicueta, who, like Nianzou, is already training with the group, are also viable options.

For the upcoming match against Levante, a potential starting defensive lineup for Sevilla could include Juanlu, Carmona, Gudelj, Azpilicueta, and Oso. Despite a slow start to LaLiga, Gudelj has improved his performance while playing as a free defender in a three-man backline. Carmona has also excelled, allowing Juanlu to take the right flank. Coach Almeyda has several alternatives to finalize his first XI for the year 2026.
