Sevilla FC Returns to Training Amid Player ChallengesSevilla FC Returns to Training Amid Player Challenges

Sevilla FC returns to training this Sunday after enjoying a brief respite during this festive season, beginning their preparations for the upcoming competition. Notably, three players have opted to return a day early to expedite their fitness and reintegrate into the squad, although Marcao’s situation differs.

Nianzou and Rubén Vargas concluded the previous competitive year sidelined due to injury, and both participated in training this morning at the club’s sports facilities. Vargas, in particular, may become a focal point in the upcoming winter transfer market for Sevilla. The first league match of 2026 is scheduled to take place at the Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium against Levante on Sunday, January 4, at 14:00.

Marcao also participated in training; however, he faces a different challenge. The central defender received a red card in the last match of the year at Santiago Bernabéu and will miss the start of 2026 due to suspension. He has been handed a six-match ban—one for the double yellow card, four for “insults, verbal offenses, and injurious behavior towards the main referee,” and an additional match for “conduct contrary to sporting order.” The club intends to appeal the decision, but if unsuccessful, he would have to wait until mid-February to return to play.

This presents a setback for manager Matías Almeyda, who has shown confidence in Marcao during his initial months in charge. The Argentine coach will need to reorganize his defense once again, as the backline has struggled with consistency due to suspensions and injuries. This scenario could open up an opportunity for Kike Salas, the youth player, to prove himself to the coach.
