Shaw s Triumph and Young Talent Shines in USWNT s VictoryShaw s Triumph and Young Talent Shines in USWNT s Victory

The year 2025 has been a pivotal one for Shaw. At one point, she found herself at a crossroads, unsure of the path ahead. However, the choice she ultimately made has proven to be the right one, as she is now flourishing into the best version of herself. Reflecting on her journey, she proudly noted her recent championship win with Gotham FC and humorously reminded everyone that she is still only 21 years old.

“Being able to reflect on those times is incredibly special for me. Ending the year on a high note, like winning a championship, feels surreal. I am truly happy to be at this stage of my career, and I feel blessed to be surrounded by amazing people during these moments,” Shaw stated.

With a goal on Monday, the rising star of Gotham FC ended her 13-game goalless streak, finally receiving the recognition she deserved from the USWNT. After a challenging start to the season that included a stint with the U-23s, Shaw has clearly rebuilt herself and appears stronger than ever.

Fresh off her NWSL title, Shaw carried her positive momentum into this match. As she prepares for the offseason, she humorously noted an ironic destination for her vacation: “I’ll be going to Italy, which is ironic because I have friends from Italy. I’ll definitely take this time for rest and recovery,” she shared.

Once she returns from Italy, the USWNT hopes that Shaw will maintain her momentum into 2026, as the sky seems to be the limit for a player who just months ago was fighting to prove her worth.

Durante’s experience in the match was far from enjoyable, not solely due to the goals she conceded. Although the goals were largely unsavable, it did little to ease her disappointment. The remarkable chip from Macario and Shaw’s precise finish left little room for blame. In terms of goalkeeping, Durante had little control over the outcomes; however, she endured multiple hard hits during USWNT set pieces, which surely left her feeling sore.

There was a moment where one could sense Macario’s decision-making process as she assessed her options before executing a perfect chip to score. This goal exemplified what she is capable of when in form. With her first-half goal, she now boasts five goals in her last three USWNT appearances, bringing her total to eight for the year—leading the team.

“Cat is such a special player, and I know if she gets the ball in front of the goal, it’s probably going to be a goal,” Yohannes said, reflecting on their growing partnership both on and off the pitch. This development is particularly vital for the USWNT, which had previously missed Macario due to injuries.

The scoreline of two-nil is certainly an improvement over three-nil, but performance-wise, Italy failed to pose much of a threat. The USWNT dominated possession, controlling 66% of the ball and launching seven shots compared to Italy’s single attempt.

Italy’s current five-game winless streak is concerning, especially after previous close matches. The team entered this window ranked 12th in the world, standing in stark contrast to the USWNT’s second-place status. Despite their talent, translating near misses into crucial victories will be key to advancing their program.

Hayes remains unfazed by age, having started three teenagers in this match: Yohannes, Jordyn Bugg, and Claire Hutton—all of whom made significant contributions. Yohannes, in particular, was a standout player, showcasing her ability to influence the game positively. Although Hayes expressed her encouragement, she also emphasized the necessity for continued development.

“You can’t put a ceiling on anyone. But she’s 18, and while we want to nurture her strengths, we also need to enhance her defensive skills to prepare her for the top level,” Hayes explained.

Hutton and Bugg also performed well. Hutton partnered effectively with Lindsey Horan in midfield, while Bugg demonstrated solid defense in the rare instances she was challenged. The youthful trio played beyond their years, earning commendation for their maturity on the field.

As these young talents continue to earn Hayes’ trust, their development will undoubtedly strengthen the USWNT’s future prospects.
