Sonia Bompastor, who has achieved the remarkable feat of winning the Women’s Champions League both as a player and a manager with Lyon, has extended her contract with Chelsea until 2030.

The 45-year-old took over as head coach in May 2024 following the departure of Emma Hayes. In her inaugural season, she led Chelsea to an unbeaten domestic treble, clinching the Women’s Super League, FA Cup, and League Cup titles.

Despite Chelsea’s previous dominance in the league, having won the WSL title for the past six years, the team currently finds itself 12 points behind leaders Manchester City, sitting in third place after a series of disappointing results.

In her statement, Bompastor expressed gratitude for the club’s “unwavering support and the trust they have shown in me.” She emphasized, “It’s a privilege to lead this team, and I could not be prouder to represent Chelsea.”

Chelsea has faced challenges this season, with a notable decline attributed to injuries. As they prepare to face Tottenham, who are just one point behind them in the standings, the outlook for their league title defense appears precarious, particularly following back-to-back defeats to Arsenal and Manchester City.

Bompastor remained optimistic, stating, “Our success as a team is built on grit, resilience, and intensity, and we do not settle for anything less than winning. We have so much left to fight for; we are competing on four fronts, and we will give everything. My focus is firmly on bringing more success to this amazing club.”
