omidbasir- Juventus coach Luciano Spalletti emphasized the potential of United States midfielder Weston McKennie in a more offensive role following his team’s impressive 3-0 victory over Napoli on Sunday.

“McKennie is an ideal central striker,” Spalletti stated. “He is tenacious, possesses aerial strength, and has excellent jumping ability. His decision-making contributes significantly to our results. He would be an exceptional striker.”

This victory over the reigning Serie A champions propelled Spalletti’s team into fifth place, keeping them competitive in the race for a top-four finish, while leaders Inter Milan hold a commanding position with 52 points from 22 matches.

McKennie, who played the full 90 minutes, was not the only North American to receive accolades after the match. Canadian forward Jonathan David also drew attention, scoring his third goal in four games.

“David demonstrated his capacity to excel in tight situations within the box, indicating that he can effectively challenge opponents,” Spalletti remarked. “It’s crucial to exert all your strength in those moments; otherwise, opportunities are lost. His goal showcased his qualities as a true striker.”

Both McKennie and David are anticipated to be pivotal players for the United States and Canada, respectively, as they prepare to co-host the World Cup this summer.

With this result, Spalletti managed to outmaneuver Antonio Conte, as both coaches faced off against their former teams.

Midway through the first half, David skillfully chested down a pass from Manuel Locatelli and finished with precision. Juventus had earlier come close to scoring when Khephren Thuram struck the post, and shortly after David’s goal, Francisco Conceicao’s attempt was cleared off the line by Napoli defender Alessandro Buongiorno.

Kenan Yildiz and Filip Kostic further solidified the victory with additional goals in the second half.

As a result, Napoli fell from third to fourth place, now tied on points with Roma, which drew 1-1 against second-place AC Milan.

Spalletti previously led Napoli to the Serie A title in 2023, while Conte has a rich history with Juventus, securing three consecutive Italian league titles after his playing career at the club.

David, who scored in his Serie A debut for Juventus in August, experienced a scoring drought until recently, during which he netted a goal and provided an assist against Sassuolo and further scored against Cremonese. He also contributed an assist in Juventus’ Champions League victory over Benfica last Wednesday.

The Canadian international’s season has seen challenges, including a coaching change, with Spalletti taking over from the dismissed Igor Tudor in October.

On a positive note, Napoli welcomed Romelu Lukaku back into action in the second half, marking his first appearance since an injury sustained during a preseason friendly. However, Lukaku squandered his only chance, despite a well-executed setup from Rasmus Hojlund.
