Following an unexpected challenge against the German giants Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, St. Pauli defender Hauke Wahl commended head coach Alexander Blessin and his staff for providing the players with a robust game plan. Despite being unable to secure a victory at the Allianz Arena, Wahl found merit in the 3-1 away defeat.

This recent loss marks St. Pauli’s ninth consecutive defeat in the league. The Kiezkicker from Hamburg have not managed to win or draw since their triumph over Augsburg in mid-September.

Despite this concerning streak, there is little question surrounding Blessin’s position as head coach. Even though St. Pauli currently sits in the automatic relegation zone, it appears that Blessin’s role remains secure.

In a recent mixed zone interview, Wahl emphasized that the players continue to support Blessin. The Hamburg native, one of the few to have found the net during this challenging period, expressed optimism about the team’s direction, citing the spirited performance against Bayern as a foundation for future improvements.

“This was another small step in the right direction,” Wahl stated. “Since our narrow losses to Freiburg and Union Berlin last week, I’ve observed progress. While we haven’t earned any points from these matches, it’s certainly easier to show passion at Allianz Arena.

“However, Munich cannot be a one-off experience. We must consistently deliver this level of passion week after week. If we fail to do so, remaining in the league will be impossible. The passion we showcased on the pitch must become our standard; we cannot fall below this threshold.

“Although there are discussions in the public and media regarding the coach, we as a team are not engaging in that dialogue,” Wahl added. “We arrived in Munich with an excellent match plan crafted by our coaching team.”
