FSV Mainz 05 has officially announced the signing of defender Stefan Posch on loan. The former Hoffenheim player is making his return to the Bundesliga after a three-and-a-half-year absence, following numerous speculations about his comeback to Germany.

Posch brings a wealth of Bundesliga experience, having previously enjoyed some of his most successful years in the league.

A significant hurdle regarding Posch’s return was resolved when his former Serie A club, Como 1907, acquired him outright from FC Bologna for €5.5 million. Following this transfer, Posch signed a new contract with Como, valid until 2029, before being loaned to Mainz.

While the loan agreement with Mainz does not appear to include a purchase option, it is customary in the industry for Mainz to owe Como loan fees contingent upon avoiding relegation. Posch joins Augsburg striker Philipp Tietz and Stuttgart winger Silas as the third January signing aimed at strengthening the Rheinhessen squad in their ongoing relegation battle.

“Stefan Posch is an experienced defender who excels in direct duels,” stated FSV sporting director Nico Bungert in a club announcement. “He has demonstrated his quality both in the Bundesliga and on the international stage. His attributes make him the immediate reinforcement for the defense that we have been seeking for the latter half of the season.”

Posch himself expressed optimism about the team’s prospects: “The primary goal must be to escape the bottom of the table as swiftly as possible and dedicate ourselves fully to the project of remaining in the league. I am confident that we can achieve this, and I am eager to contribute to our efforts.”
