Steven Berghuis Future at Ajax Uncertain Amid MLS InterestSteven Berghuis Future at Ajax Uncertain Amid MLS Interest

Steven Berghuis continues to be part of Ajax’s roster, but does this mean he will see out the season at the Johan Cruyff ArenA?

There are no guarantees. The transfer deadline in the Eredivisie and nearly all major leagues has passed, yet the right winger remains a topic of discussion in the United States. The Seattle Sounders have shown interest in him, along with another unnamed Major League Soccer (MLS) club, which is rumored to be New York City FC, coached by Dutchman Pascal Jansen. Notably, the transfer rules in the United States differ from those in Europe.

“He has a connection to America”

This implies that the Seattle Sounders, or any MLS team, could still pursue Berghuis and facilitate a transfer to the United States. However, any move would require his consent. His agent, Guido Albers, remarked a year ago, “He has a connection to America. So if he ever gets the chance to play in the MLS, he will certainly seize it.” The question remains whether this sentiment still holds; Berghuis currently earns a substantial salary at Ajax and has two young children to consider.

Medical Examination

On the other hand, there are indications that a transfer for Berghuis is feasible: he is approaching full fitness. Ahead of the Eredivisie match between Ajax and Excelsior last Sunday, interim coach Fred Grim stated, “Berghuis could potentially make a brief appearance at the end of the match.” Ultimately, he did not participate, but it is expected that the veteran will soon be back on the pitch, increasing the likelihood of passing any future medical evaluations for a transfer.
