Szoboszlai s Brilliant Free Kick Propels Liverpool ForwardSzoboszlai s Brilliant Free Kick Propels Liverpool Forward

Liverpool had to wait until first-half stoppage time to take the lead in their recent match. Initially, they believed they would be awarded a penalty following a handball on the edge of the box, but a VAR review altered the situation, leaving them with a free-kick from 18 yards instead of the expected 12.

This change did not deter Dominik Szoboszlai, who realized that Marseille’s defensive wall lacked a player lying down to block potential shots. Seizing the opportunity, he executed a clever strike, demonstrating that Liverpool had prepared for such a scenario.

Szoboszlai explained his decision to go under the wall rather than over it, stating to TNT Sports: “I did my homework. I was told that if no one is lying down, I might have a chance to hit it under the wall, and since no one was there, I tried it, and it worked out.”

Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, credited goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero for devising the free-kick strategy, expressing satisfaction that a potential penalty appeal did not hinder their momentum. He remarked, “It was a moment from Dom, great work from Xavi as well. Although, I think it shouldn’t have been Dom who took that ball. It should have been Mo [Salah] because it should have been a penalty.”

Slot continued, “We have often found ourselves on the unfavorable side of refereeing decisions this season. I have reiterated that we should not be reliant on these judgments and should perform well regardless. It’s encouraging that we managed to secure the win tonight.”

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard also praised Szoboszlai’s composure and his overall form throughout the 2025-26 season. He commented, “If he remains humble and committed to improving, he can reach another level. The talent is evident, and he has the right people around him to continue developing.”

Gerrard cautioned against allowing ego to creep in, referencing Szoboszlai’s recent back-heel attempt and a missed penalty against Burnley. He emphasized, “I believe there is a world-class level in him, and he has shown glimpses of that this season.”

Discussing Szoboszlai taking free-kick duties from Salah, who had returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, Gerrard noted, “His confidence is palpable. I loved how he insisted on taking the free-kick, even with Salah in his ear. Szoboszlai took no heed of Salah’s status and executed the play brilliantly, showcasing the preparation behind it.”

The victory in southern France positions Liverpool favorably in their pursuit of automatic qualification for the Champions League’s last 16. They are determined to return to that prestigious stage next season, currently holding fourth place in the Premier League, just one point ahead of their nearest competitors, as they gear up for an upcoming match against Bournemouth on Saturday.
