The Debate Surrounding Ajax’s Youri Regeer

Ajax is looking to recruit a new number six, although they already have Youri Regeer available for that position. However, Marco van Basten has expressed reservations about the young midfielder, who has recently been receiving accolades for his performance.

During the Ziggo Sport program Rondo, Wim Kieft drew a comparison between Regeer and Jordan Henderson, stating, “Remember when Henderson joined Ajax and everyone ridiculed him? Now, Regeer is being compared to Henderson because of his impressive play.”

Conversely, Henk Spaan holds a markedly different view, regarding Regeer as the ideal holding midfielder for Ajax. He noted that Ajax faced difficulties against Telstar on Sunday, attributing this to Regeer’s absence after a tackle from Cedric Hatenboer, which resulted in a red card for Hatenboer. Spaan remarked, “When Regeer was substituted after the foul, I noted ‘substitution?’ He was replaced by Kian Fitz-Jim, who did not make a significant impact. Regeer’s exit disrupted the team’s balance.” The 22-year-old midfielder has become a vital player for Ajax under interim coach Fred Grim, having not missed a single match to date.
