Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly nearing the signing of young talent Souza from Santos, according to Fabrizio Romano. The two clubs have settled on a transfer fee of around €15 million (£13 million) and have successfully negotiated personal terms. Souza is poised to become Spurs’ first acquisition of the January transfer window.

The season has been challenging for Spurs, who currently find themselves in 14th place in the Premier League standings, prompting speculation regarding the future of manager Thomas Frank. In an effort to bolster the team’s defense, the addition of Souza will provide competition for Djed Spence at right-back, alongside Pedro Porro, while Destiny Udogie will benefit from a dedicated backup. Spence has been playing out of position at left-back, despite being right-footed.

Football expert Tim Vickery provided insights into Spurs’ interest in Souza, noting that the young player has already caught the attention of Brazil’s national coach, Carlo Ancelotti, ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Vickery remarked on Souza’s impressive attributes, stating, “He is a 19-year-old left-back, very physically strong. A great footballer and very versatile. He defends well and attacks well. He can go on the outside and also cut in on the inside.”

Souza’s debut season has been difficult, marked by Santos’s struggle against relegation, from which they narrowly escaped. Vickery highlighted the challenges he faced in such a demanding environment, emphasizing, “For him to come through, fighting relegation, and doing very well, speaks volumes. He is already on the radar of Carlo Ancelotti for the Brazil team.”

Despite Spurs winning only one of their last six matches across all competitions, Frank has expressed confidence in his position. After a narrow 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth, he addressed the frustrations of players and fans, stating, “I haven’t seen that situation, that’s one thing. I think it’s fair to say everyone involved in Tottenham – players, staff, fans, everyone – this is a tough one to take today. I think overall the performance was good, especially in the second half. That is extremely painful to be part of, so, of course, people are frustrated, I’m frustrated.”

Frank mentioned the ongoing efforts to recruit new players, asserting, “As I said quite a few times, we are in the market, the club is working very hard. It’s difficult in January, and we need to get players in that can improve the squad.”

Looking ahead, Spurs are set to face Aston Villa in the FA Cup this weekend, aiming for a significant impact in the prestigious tournament. While Souza is unlikely to be available in time for this match, he may join the squad for the following week’s crucial London derby against West Ham, who currently sit in the relegation zone. Spurs, positioned 13 points above their city rivals and just eight points off the top four, are eager to initiate a winning streak that could dramatically alter Frank’s fortunes. Souza will be keen to contribute to this potential turnaround upon his arrival in north London.
