Tottenham Hotspur Secures Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid

Tottenham Hotspur has announced the signing of Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid on Wednesday.

Gallagher joined Atlético Madrid from Chelsea in August 2024, in a transfer deal valued at approximately €40 million ($44 million).

After spending 17 months in the Spanish capital, the England midfielder is set to return to London under the management of Thomas Frank at Spurs.

Atlético had bolstered their midfield by acquiring players such as Johnny Cardoso, Álex Baena, Thiago Almada, and Nico González over the summer. This influx of talent meant Gallagher faced increased competition for a starting position within Diego Simeone’s squad, resulting in frequent appearances from the bench this season.

“I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the club felt the same,” Gallagher stated in Tottenham’s announcement. “The process was seamless, and I am ready to take the field. I am aware of the incredible support from the fans and am thrilled to be part of this club, aiming to create memorable moments together.”

Gallagher joins a Tottenham team currently grappling with inconsistencies and numerous injuries. James Maddison is expected to miss the entire season due to a ruptured ACL sustained during preseason. Rodrigo Bentancur is also likely to be out for a minimum of three months following hamstring surgery, while Mohammed Kudus is anticipated to be sidelined until after the March international window due to a thigh injury. Additionally, Dejan Kulusevski has not played since April due to a knee issue, and his return remains uncertain.

“He is still young, which leaves much room for improvement, yet he possesses significant experience across the Premier League, La Liga, and the England national team,” commented Spurs boss Thomas Frank. “Conor has demonstrated leadership capabilities, which will add maturity, character, and personality to our dressing room.
