According to reports from Sky Germany, Tottenham Hotspur has been scouting Luca Netz, the left-back for Borussia Mönchengladbach. The 22-year-old defender is under an expiring contract and is considered a potential candidate for sale during the ongoing January transfer window.

Several Serie A clubs have also expressed interest in acquiring the Germany U21 international. The Rheinische Post, a Westphalian newspaper, has stated that Borussia Mönchengladbach has no intention of renewing Netz’s contract. Sporting director Rouven Schröder has indicated that the club is willing to entertain offers for the defender, who is valued at €6 million. Due to his contractual situation, Netz is eligible to negotiate a free transfer to another club this month.

Since joining Gladbach from Hertha BSC in the summer of 2021, Netz was regarded as a promising talent with potential future contributions to the German national team. Throughout his tenure, he has seen considerable playing time under coaches such as Adi Hütter, Daniel Farke, and Gerardo Seoane. However, the club has faced challenges regarding consistency in its defensive lineup over the past four years, affecting players like Netz and his teammate, Joe Scally, both of whom are reportedly available for transfer this month.

In Netz’s case, he has experienced stiff competition for playing time with Lukas Ullrich, another Berlin native and Germany U21 international. The two have been engaged in a tight contest for minutes over the last two seasons. This current season, Netz has only made two Bundesliga starts in eleven appearances. Nevertheless, new head coach Eugen Polanski has recently favored him, granting five consecutive starts in the league.

Despite this opportunity, Netz has struggled with confidence and has recorded only one assist this season. Similar to other German left-backs like Robin Gosens and Maximilian Mittelstädt, his crossing into the box can appear unrefined. Additionally, his long carries are infrequent, and he occasionally avoids direct confrontations in midfield. However, glimpses of the reliable left-back he once was, who consistently provided assists from 2021 to 2024, can still be seen.
