Trevoh Chalobah has followed in the footsteps of his brother Nathaniel by earning a call-up to the England national team, making them the 21st pair of siblings to represent the country.

The Chelsea defender, alongside Manchester City’s goalkeeper James Trafford, has been summoned to the squad after Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope withdrew due to injury. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe confirmed that Gordon is sidelined with a hip injury, while Pope is out due to a concussion, a statement corroborated by the Football Association on Tuesday.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who sustained a foot injury during his team’s Conference League victory over AZ Alkmaar last week, has also joined the squad under the guidance of manager Thomas Tuchel, but he will be subject to further assessment in the coming days.

England’s final World Cup qualifiers are set against Albania and Serbia, with the team having already secured qualification for next summer’s tournament.

Chalobah received his initial call-up from Tuchel in May and made his international debut against Senegal. In September, Tuchel expressed that the 26-year-old was unfortunate to miss out on the squad for qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia, and he was also not selected for the following October international break.

Tuchel has played a pivotal role in Chalobah’s career, having given him his debut for Chelsea in 2021. This season, Chalobah has participated in all but four matches for Chelsea, contributing to the club’s current standing in third place in the Premier League, as well as their progression to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and the league phase of the Champions League.
