Martin Chivers, the esteemed former forward for Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team, has sadly passed away at the age of 80.

During his illustrious eight-year tenure with Tottenham, Chivers netted an impressive 174 goals in 367 appearances, playing a pivotal role in the club’s victories in the League Cup on two occasions, as well as the UEFA Cup. Additionally, he represented England, scoring 14 goals in 24 matches.

Tottenham Hotspur expressed their sorrow in a statement, saying: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our legendary former striker, Martin Chivers. We extend our deepest sympathies to Martin’s family, friends, and former teammates during this incredibly sad time. Rest in peace, Martin. One of the all-time greats.”

Born in Southampton in April 1945, Chivers began his professional career with his hometown club at the age of 17. After achieving a remarkable tally of 106 goals in 190 appearances for Southampton, he was signed by Spurs manager Bill Nicholson in January 1968 for a fee of £125,000.

Later in his career, Chivers had stints in Switzerland and Norway, alongside spells at Norwich City, Brighton, and Dorchester Town, before concluding his playing career in 1983 following a brief period at Barnet.

In honor of Chivers, Tottenham will don black armbands during their match against Bournemouth this Wednesday.
