Mia Hamant, a goalkeeper for the University of Washington, tragically passed away on Friday at the age of 21 after a prolonged struggle with kidney cancer, as announced by the university. Originally from California, Hamant distinguished herself as a key player for the Huskies during the 2024 season. However, she was unable to participate in her senior year following her diagnosis with a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer. In April 2025, Hamant was diagnosed with Stage 4 SMARCB1-deficient kidney cancer, prompting her to step back from team activities. Despite this, she remained a significant presence on the sidelines and continued her studies while undergoing treatment. Her resilience and determination did not go unnoticed, as the Big Ten honored her with the 2025 Sportsmanship Award, recognizing her influence both on and off the field. The announcement of her diagnosis sparked an outpouring of support from the athletic community. A GoFundMe campaign raised thousands of dollars to assist with her medical expenses. Additionally, the University of Washington softball team issued a heartfelt statement in her memory, while the USL League Two club, West Seattle Junction, introduced a special kit, pledging to donate 10 percent of the proceeds to support Hamant’s family. On Thursday afternoon, the university released a statement expressing their grief over her passing: “We are heartbroken by the passing of Mia Hamant after her courageous battle with cancer. Mia inspired everyone around her with her strength and spirit. Our love is with her family, teammates, and all who knew her. Her legacy will forever live in Husky Athletics.” Washington head coach Nicole Van Dyke also extended her condolences, stating, “Mia was the heart of our program – someone who uplifted everyone around her with her joy, courage, and kindness. Even in the most challenging times, she exhibited an unshakable spirit that inspired her teammates and coaches daily.” Post navigation Vinicius Jr.’s Struggles at Real Madrid: A Clash of Personalities and Ambitions Outkast and MUNDIAL Unveil Stankonia FC Capsule to Celebrate 25 Years of Musical Innovation
