Trinity Rodman s Journey as a Leader and Trailblazer in Women s SoccerTrinity Rodman s Journey as a Leader and Trailblazer in Women s Soccer

omidbasir- Trinity Rodman wholeheartedly embraces her new role as a captain for the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT), although she acknowledges the adjustments that come with it.

Following her appearance in Tuesday’s match against Chile, Rodman has now achieved 13 international goals and 49 caps. She has taken on the responsibility of mentoring younger and less experienced players during this January window, including Ayo Oke, a recent signing for the Denver Summit, whom she has taken under her wing.

“I approached Ayo a couple of times since she joined late as a new player, which can be intimidating,” Rodman shared. “I wanted to check in on her and ask, ‘Are you good?’ She expressed her nerves, saying, ‘I’m nervous.’” Oke made her first international appearance in Tuesday’s match and, although new to the senior team, has participated in several Under-23 national team camps and matches.

Rodman recounted, “During the game, she was understandably anxious in the locker room, but in a good way—those are the right kind of nerves. I reassured her, saying, ‘You’ve had an incredible week, and you’re a fantastic outside back.’” She emphasized the importance of reassurance, encouraging her teammates to remain authentic to themselves.

Describing herself as a “young veteran,” Rodman finds common ground with her boyfriend, Ben Shelton, a promising professional tennis player. “We both bring flair and personality to our sports, and we relate on many levels,” she remarked. Since making their relationship ‘Instagram official’ in March 2025, Rodman has been a regular presence at Shelton’s tournaments, while he has supported her through various challenges, even engaging in soccer training during the offseason.

Head coach Hayes has quickly established herself as a supportive yet demanding figure within the national team. Following Rodman’s first match as captain, Hayes acknowledged the significance of the moment, stating, “I’m happy for her. It was a tough year, but she’s ready to move forward. Today symbolized a new beginning. She is settled and has a secure future, which has alleviated a considerable burden from her shoulders.”

Rodman appreciates Hayes’ approach, which fosters a culture of accountability without fear. “I’m grateful to have a coach who believes in us. Even when we make mistakes, she’s there clapping and saying, ‘You tried.’ That encouragement is invaluable.”

Their dynamic was further highlighted by a viral dance sequence during the January matches. After scoring against Paraguay, Rodman celebrated with the “sexy dexy” dance and playfully urged Hayes to join her. Initially declining, Hayes ultimately participated in the dance after Rodman scored again, showcasing their fun rapport. “These players keep me young. I’m not complaining,” Hayes commented.

This year marks a pivotal moment for Trinity Rodman as she signed a groundbreaking contract with the Washington Spirit at the end of January, making her the highest-paid female soccer player globally. This achievement not only reflects her talent but also sets a new precedent for the league.

Rodman’s contract was finalized amid ongoing discussions between the NWSL and the NWSL Players Association regarding the new High Impact Player Rule, which permits clubs to exceed the salary cap by up to $1 million for qualifying players. While the rule is now in effect, the NWSLPA has filed a grievance, leaving several key issues unresolved even as Rodman’s contract is secured.

Nevertheless, Rodman is quickly refocusing on the field as the NWSL season approaches. She is gearing up for the SheBelieves Cup, where she is expected to play a crucial role in the USWNT’s attacking line-up. While her team, referred to as “Triple Espresso,” may not be fully reunited by then, the outlook points toward on-field synergy as the season progresses.

As she advances in her career, Rodman is not only representing the present for both her club and country but is also helping to shape the future of the USWNT and the NWSL.
