Jude Bellingham made his first international start since June during England’s 2-0 victory over Albania, but his reaction to being substituted in the 84th minute raised eyebrows. Coach Thomas Tuchel remarked on the importance of behavior and indicated that he would address Bellingham’s visible irritation following the decision to replace him with Morgan Rogers.

Tuchel highlighted the need for players to accept decisions made during the game, especially given the recent incident involving Cristiano Ronaldo, who received a red card and will miss the opening matches of the World Cup. He noted that another booking for Bellingham could have led to a suspension, stating, “I don’t want to make more out of it but I stick to my words – ‘behavior is key’ and respect towards the teammates who come in.”

Bellingham’s performance was notable, as he was one of seven players changed by Tuchel for the final qualifier, demonstrating his skills in both attack and defense. His last significant contribution was celebrating Harry Kane’s second goal before his number was displayed by the fourth official, leading to what former England defender Stephen Warnock described as a “furious” reaction from the young midfielder.

In the post-match press conference, Tuchel confirmed he would review the incident, saying, “I saw he was not happy, I don’t want to make it bigger at the moment than it is. We are about standards, level, and commitment to each other. We will not change our decision just because someone waves their arms.”

Tuchel had previously referred to Bellingham’s on-field behavior as “repulsive,” a remark for which he later apologized. Despite his disappointment, Bellingham showed professionalism by applauding the fans as he left the pitch and shaking Tuchel’s hand on the sidelines, actions that Warnock described as the “right thing” to do.

Warnock speculated on the conversations Bellingham may have had upon leaving the field, suggesting that teammates like Dan Burn and Phil Foden approached him to offer support and remind him of the importance of respect. He emphasized that to succeed in the World Cup, players must sometimes accept lesser roles for the benefit of the team.

Conor Coady, who was part of the England squad during the 2022 World Cup, expressed confidence that Bellingham would understand Tuchel’s decision once the initial emotions settled. He acknowledged Bellingham’s desire to prove himself, especially after missing the last camp, and noted that the midfielder’s performance displayed signs of him trying to catch up with his peers.
