Thomas Tuchel has asserted that Jude Bellingham must learn to accept his decisions after the midfielder displayed frustration upon being substituted late in England’s World Cup qualification victory against Albania.

In a match where Harry Kane scored a late brace, England secured a 2-0 win in Tirana, concluding a flawless Group K campaign with eight victories and eight clean sheets.

Bellingham, making his first England start since June, was among seven players rotated from the previous match against Serbia. He was substituted six minutes before the final whistle, prompting a visible reaction of frustration just after Kane’s second goal, as he noticed Morgan Rogers waiting to come on.

Tuchel did not take kindly to Bellingham’s reaction, stating, “That’s the decision, and he has to accept it. His friend is waiting on the sideline, so you need to accept it, respect it, and keep on going.”

When questioned if Bellingham’s response contradicted his expectations regarding player behavior, Tuchel remarked, “I didn’t see it that way; I’m going to have to review it. I understood that he was not happy, but I don’t want to exaggerate the situation.”

He acknowledged that highly competitive players like Bellingham might not appreciate being substituted, but emphasized the importance of unity and respect within the team. “It is about standards and commitments to each other. We will not change our decisions simply because someone is expressing dissatisfaction.”

Tuchel noted that diverting attention to individual incidents can create a poor impression and detract from the collective success that has characterized England’s qualification campaign.

His tenure as the German coach has yielded impressive results, as England became the first European side to win six consecutive World Cup qualifiers without conceding a goal. The opponents for next summer’s tournament will be determined in the draw scheduled for December 5.

Reflecting on future matches, Tuchel stated, “I can’t dare to think about a starting XI for the World Cup, as there are many months ahead. However, we have learned so much from this match. It was an emotionally charged environment, akin to a cup game, where the underdog is well-prepared and waits for opportunities.”

He added, “They have conceded only five goals, and we scored four of them. We recognized the need for patience and positivity throughout the match, avoiding frustration when faced with setbacks. It was crucial to stay committed to the fundamental principles of football.”

Tuchel expressed pride in the team’s progress throughout the three qualification camps, stating, “Congratulations to the players; it has been a pleasure to support them from the sidelines. It is hard to imagine not seeing them on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I will miss them until March, but they performed exceptionally well.”
