United Eyes Garner as Midfield ReinforcementUnited Eyes Garner as Midfield Reinforcement

In a recent report by the Daily Mail, Manchester United is evaluating the possibility of a budget-friendly approach to reacquire James Garner, who progressed through the club’s youth system before transferring to Everton under David Moyes three years later.

Garner has distinguished himself as one of Everton’s top performers this season, notably contributing to their 1-0 victory over United in the Premier League on November 24.

Reports suggest that United’s interest in Garner is fueled by his impressive performances as well as the fact that his current contract with Everton concludes at the end of the season, prompting considerations for a potential move back to Old Trafford next month.

Reflecting on his impressive form, Garner stated earlier this month, “Playing as a senior midfielder comes quite naturally to me. I consider myself a quiet leader, having been captain throughout my journey in the youth teams. I hope to elevate my teammates in midfield, and I believe I can facilitate their development as well.”

Everton holds an option to extend Garner’s contract for an additional year and has begun negotiations with his representatives to secure a longer-term agreement.

According to the same report, United views Garner as an economically viable option to initiate a midfield overhaul, which may also include the acquisition of Nottingham Forest’s Anderson next summer.

Anderson has established himself as a pivotal player for England’s national team under coach Thomas Tuchel, particularly in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup in North America.

The 23-year-old has secured six caps for the Three Lions and played a significant role in their successful qualification campaign, positioning him to start their opening match against Croatia on June 17, 2026, pending fitness.

Currently, Anderson is contracted to Nottingham Forest until 2029, following a five-year deal he signed upon transferring from Newcastle in 2024.

Commenting on Anderson’s rise as a vital component in England’s qualifying success, Tuchel remarked in November, “Anderson is a key player for us. He is among the best midfielders in the Premier League, which is why he is part of our squad and starting lineup. His performance has been consistently impressive, and he needs to maintain that momentum. He is a highly complete and agile midfielder, continuously demonstrating his capabilities.”

As rumors of United’s interest in both Garner and Anderson circulate, head coach Amorim confirmed that the club is prepared to venture into the January transfer market for players who meet their long-term vision.

“Our focus will be on acquiring players who are ideal for our future, both now and at the end of the season,” the Portuguese coach stated before United’s recent 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa.

United is currently facing a shortage of players following the departures of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo, who have joined their respective national teams for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which runs until January 18.

Additionally, they will be without captain Bruno Fernandes, who is expected to be sidelined for a month due to a hamstring injury sustained in the match against Villa.

While the club has yet to confirm, The Athletic reports that United has decided to recall young midfielder Toby Collyer from his loan with Championship club West Bromwich Albion, aiming to enhance head coach Amorim’s squad options.

Collyer, 21, has made 12 league appearances for West Brom, contributing one assist.

United looks to return to winning form as they host Eddie Howe’s Newcastle in the league on Boxing Day, followed by another home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 30.
